The stone architecture of Lithuania of XIII – XVIII centuries

At the end of XIV – first half XV century Lithuanian churches were influenced by castle architecture and the Gothic churches of the Franciscan order and East Prussia. They are distinguished by thick walls faced with brick. Widely spaced small Windows emphasized the wide sides of the walls. These planes due to the decorative red brick, drawing the brickwork, grey seams of lime, and sometimes the ornament of black clinker. “Typical of the Gothic verticality was emphasized by buttresses, high gable roofs, dissected by shallow niches, pediments, semi-circular or Lancet Windows and doors”. In the second half of XV – first half XVI century churches, respecting the old composite base, acquire new features. The walls become higher, and therefore less tangible for their heaviness. The buttresses more emphatic in drawing, not so much perform a constructive function, how much the role of a decorative element. The openings of Windows and doors increase and get a new design of shaped bricks. Cross, star or mesh arches span the interior space of the premises. Tik-Kuyu — siege well Chufut-Kale

Tick-Kuyu or, more simply, well the siege of Calais — an ancient system of underground hydraulic structures. A sensational discovery was made in 1998-2001.

The history of discovery

Since the water in the fortress was imported — it was taken in the sources of Karai-Chokrak and the Gazi-Mansur. Also used the rain and snow water. The water reserves in the form of snow and ice was stored in caves beneath the straw and felt.

During the siege, water was delivered from a secret system of waterworks. When the fortress lost its military significance, the information about it, who had hidden, was forgotten. But not all. Secret location underground structures were passed from generation to generation elected; over time, its guardians have become the elders and leaders of the people of the Karaites. Brief information was published by the Karaite gahs (spiritual head) of S. Chapel in 1895:
